A Message from Development

We all crave feedback, and hearing from past management students is especially rewarding. It’s interesting to see the reaction of faculty when told that their instruction made a difference in the career of a former student. There is often a mixture of surprise, pleasure and (depending on the person) perhaps even a bit of “aw shucks…” One 2004 graduate of the master’s program in supply chains and operations management wrote to one of his professors (and I am paraphrasing slightly):

“Since graduating, I have been with Accenture in its supply chain management practice. Last week, UB came to mind. The material covered during our training was, not for the first time, exactly in line with what I learned at UB. In a few instances, we even used the same set of cases. In addition to the striking similarity in training, the decision to get my master’s degree at UB has been a good one. I use the concepts I learned at UB on a daily basis.”

Another alumnus, who majored in marketing, showed his gratitude by making a $40,000 commitment of scholarship support in honor of his primary professor.

During a recent Dean’s Advisory Council meeting, a longstanding member and a new member compared notes and found that they both shared a favorite accounting professor, in whose name they are planning to make a gift.

In a recent finance class, where students presented analyses of sub-prime mortgage companies (timely, huh?), an alumnus and senior portfolio manager from Citigroup reported that our student valuations were at least as good as the best he and his colleagues saw from Dartmouth and Wharton.

The older I become, the more I recognize that gratitude and reciprocity are keys to making the world go ’round.
